The Diabetes Doula Feeding Framework

A 5-week prenatal lactation course for people with diabetes who want to feel prepared, supported, and confident feeding their baby.

Why This Course Exists

If you’re pregnant or planning a pregnancy with diabetes, you might be worried about milk supply, feeding safely, or what happens if birth doesn’t go as planned. Most lactation resources don’t address diabetes specifically. This course gives you the knowledge, preparation, and support you need to protect your feeding goals.

How This Course Works

The Diabetes Doula Feeding Framework is a 5-week hybrid course designed to support you as you prepare to feed your baby with diabetes.

Each week, a new module will be released on Sunday evening and delivered directly to your inbox. These modules are short, digestible video lessons (about 20–30 minutes each) that you can watch at your own pace, whenever it works best for you.

Over five weeks, we’ll move through the five foundations of the Diabetes Doula Feeding Framework, helping you understand how diabetes affects lactation, how to prepare during pregnancy, and how to protect your feeding goals once baby arrives.

At the end of the course, we’ll gather for a live community Q&A on Zoom on Sunday, April 26 at 7 PM ET, where you can ask questions, talk through real-life scenarios, and receive additional guidance.

All participants will receive lifetime access to the course materials, and a recording of the live Q&A will be shared for anyone who can’t attend live.

For those who choose the supported tier, you’ll also receive five weeks of Voxer support, giving you direct access to ask questions and receive personalized guidance throughout the course.

Why This Course Is Different

Most prenatal lactation education wasn’t designed with diabetes in mind.

People living with diabetes often have additional questions and considerations when preparing to feed their baby — from how blood sugars may shift during early feeding, to how birth experiences and postpartum recovery can affect milk production. Yet these conversations are often missing from traditional lactation education.

This course was created to bridge that gap.

I’m Sarah, the voice behind The Diabetes Doula. I’ve been living with type 1 diabetes for more than 20 years and support families as a doula, lactation educator, and integrative nutrition diabetes coach. My work lives at the intersection of diabetes care, birth, and feeding support.

I’m also a mother of two and my own feeding journeys have taken different paths.

My first baby was born after an induction that ended in a cesarean birth, and we navigated the early days learning to feed together without a NICU stay. My second baby arrived after a spontaneous labor and VBAC, followed by a NICU stay for hypoglycemia. Both of my children were initially fed with a combination of pumping, bottles, and breastfeeding before we transitioned to exclusively breastfeeding.

I breastfed my first for 16 months and I’m currently 16 months (and counting!) into breastfeeding my second.

Through both my personal experiences and my work supporting other families, I understand the many forms feeding can take — whether that looks like exclusive breastfeeding, pumping, or using formula alongside breastmilk.

Providing your baby with breastmilk often takes time, flexibility, and support, especially in the early weeks. My approach is rooted in compassion, kindness, and meeting people exactly where they are, without pressure or unrealistic expectations.

The Diabetes Doula Feeding Framework was created to offer the kind of preparation I wish more families with diabetes had access to: evidence-based guidance, practical tools, and supportive education that honors your unique goals and experiences.

FAQs

What if my baby arrives before the course is finished?

1

No worries! You’ll have lifetime access to all course materials, so you can watch each module on your own schedule. The live Q&A will also be recorded so you can view it anytime.

Do I need to plan to exclusively breastfeed?

2

Absolutely not! This course supports all feeding goals — exclusive breastfeeding, combination feeding, or pumping and bottle feeding. The focus is on giving you knowledge, confidence, and tools to feed your baby in the way that works best for you.

Is this course helpful if I’ve had feeding challenges before?

3

Yes! Many families join because they want to approach feeding differently this time, or to feel more prepared than they were in a previous birth. The course covers realistic preparation and strategies for protecting milk supply, no matter your past experiences.

How much time will I need each week?

4

Each video module is 20–30 minutes, and you can watch on your own schedule. Most participants spend 30–60 minutes per week engaging with the course materials and reflection activities. The live Q&A and optional Voxer support are additional but completely flexible.

Will this course replace my conversations with my healthcare providers?

5

What if I can’t attend the live Q&A?

6

How does the Voxer support work for the supported tier?

7

No — this course is educational and supportive, but it’s not a substitute for individualized medical advice or IBCLC support. Always follow the guidance of your care team for your unique health needs.

That’s okay! A recording of the live session will be sent to all participants so you can watch at your convenience.

The supported path includes 5 weeks of direct Voxer access, where you can send questions or concerns and receive guidance from me. This is ideal if you want extra hands-on support while working through the modules.
